PAOLO

I first saw Paolo in March of 2011 in Amboseli NP. At only 35 years of age he was set to become one of the greatest tuskers. His tusks were pointing forward and curving to join at the tip. A lovely bull, though seldom appearing in the park. For many years I never saw him again, or at least I thought I never saw him again and I got worried. When I reached out to the Amboseli Trust to ask information of him, they told me that he was doing just fine but he had changed. So I looked at some of my recent bulls images and compared them to my 2011 images. I realized that I had actually seen him a few times but didn't recognize him, as both his tusks had broken and his left ear was broken and bent forward. As the years passed his tusks continued to grow and he did eventually become one of Amboseli’s most impressive tuskers, until his premature death in January 2025, for natural causes. Upon his death, the KWS measured his right tusk at 52.9 kg (260 cm long) and his left tusk at 51 kg (252 cm long).
