Great Tuskers
One of my favourite pictures from my first trip to Kenya when I was six years-old is the one where I am in the Natural History Museum of Nairobi, standing in front of the reconstruction of Ahmed, the famous great tusker and a Kenyan living monument, who inhabited the remote wilderness of Marsabit NP until 1974 when he died of old age. I had seen his pictures and read his story, and that moment remained with me forever. Until a few years after moving to Kenya, as I was waiting for some herds of Elephants to emerge from the woodlands, I caught a glimpse of an enormous tusker, a huge bull with his tusks reaching the ground. He eventually came out in all his majesty. I later learned that his name was Tim. I was mesmerized and in awe, struggling to believe to be in the presence of such an individual. My journey in search of the last remaing magnificent great tuskers had just begun.
