I have never seen Pembe in person, nor had I heard of him until one late afternoon in June 2023, when I opened the live webcam of Ol Donyo lodge, on the Chyulu Hills, and right at that time, this magnificent tusker appeared. It was sunset and Mt Kilimanjaro was glowing in the background. It was a memorable scene. I captured the video and the screenshots, as many as I could. I learned his name from my friends at the lodge and that his tusks have grown remarkably in the last few years. I hope to see him one day. I estimate him to be born around 1985.
