Tolstoj was a great tusker from the Amboseli ecosystem, born in 1971 and died in 2022. He was from the same family as other great tuskers such as the late Tim and the living TeeJay. His tusks reached the ground at a very young age, when he was still in his early thirties. However, his right tusk broke in a fight before 2010, when I first saw him personally. In 2013, KWS decided to trim his left tusk to the same length as the right, to prevent poachers to recognize the track of his tusk in the sand. By the end of his life in 2022, both tusks had grown again to reach the ground, much thicker this time. Tolstoy was a persistent crop raider, and a poisoned spear eventually killed him.
