    ELEPHANT DUST BATH, Amboseli, 2011

  • I am parking on the edge of the dry Amboseli Lake. It’s early morning and the sun is struggling to shine through a layer of clouds. From a small elevation I scan with the binoculars the opposite side of the lake. I see some Wildebeests, Zebras, Gazelles, a couple of Giraffes walking across. Small dust devils rise in the distance. Until finally huge dark shapes appear through the hazy air in the far distance. Elephants. They cross the lake frequently to reach the water points and the lush marshes in the heart of Amboseli. A matriarch leads her family on this long journey, which takes them about one hour on hard cracked soil. They follow ancient trails used by Elephants for thousands of years. Sometimes they pause to smell other Elephants’ droppings, to see who passed by before them. I stop a long way away ahead of them and wait for them to come towards me. The cracked soil of the lake is what fascinates me the most of this scene, the texture onthe earth's surface. As the Elephants come closer and closer I point my wide angle to the ground and click as they fill the frame. They are just a few meters away yet I can't hear a sound as they walk. Just a magnificent and timeless scene.

GIRAFFES IN THE RAIN, Lake Nakuru, 2011

  • In the years from 2009 to 2012 the Rift Valley has seen exceptional rains. This has brought a sharp increase in the water level in all the lakes, including Lake Nakuru. Water invaded the surrounding plains and forests, causing the death of many trees and the dramatic reduction of the most fertile grazing areas. On this cloudy afternoon in August I am driving on a slippery track along the forest edge. Soon it starts pouring again. I try to pay attention to the track not to get stuck, which happened already so many times to me. But at the same time I look out on every branch, on every tree, under every bush, until finally through the rain I spot the unmistakable shape of a feline on a fallen log. It's a Leopard, a huge female that I have seen many times in this area. She has two full grown daughters who are also around here often. The rains probably woke her up from her afternoon rest. She stretches and licks the water off her fur. Then suddenly a cub of about five months climbs on the log. I had never seen it before. She licks it for a while, then it descends to play on a dry bush at the base of the tree. Soon she is down too, and together they disappear in the depth of the forest.
